Reminders
Classes resume on Monday, September 11. We are excited to share hugs, stories, space and learning together again!
Reading
We will review routine and expectations for Reader's Workshop. We will practice how we move and prepare ourselves for success when reading and thinking together.
This will be our first trip to the library. Students will get to meet our new librarian, Mrs. Stultz. Badrak, Duncan, Ford and Saint-Val's classes will go to the library every Wednesday. Morphey and Rozzell's classes will go to the library each Friday.
Writing
We will finally decorate our Writer's Notebooks on Thursday, September 14. Please send your child with photos, stickers, and materials to make their notebook tell the stories that make him or her unique.
The majority of our week will be spent thinking about the stories we have to share and the many ways that writer's organize and prepare themselves for writing.
Spelling
Each student will take a beginning of the year Words Their Way Inventory. This developmental spelling assessment helps teachers know what letter and pattern concepts your child has mastered. We will use this information to guide our spelling instruction this school year.
Social Studies
We spent more time apart than we have together. This week we will review and firmly establish our expectations for each other. A community is a group of people who live and work together. It's imperative that we understand what each of us needs and requires to help make learning and growing possible for each member of our community.
Math
During math this week we will pick up where we left off. On Monday, we will introduce our online resources called Dreambox. We will tape your child's username and password into the front part of their planner so that you will be able to access this resource from home.
Science
In science this week, we will review our class expectations for our science time together. We will discuss characteristics of a scientist. We will work on our portrait, "Picture Me as a Scientist."

Week 2
Reminders: First day packet forms are due Friday, September 2.
We have a school holiday, Monday, September 5. We hope you will have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend.
Reading: We will continue to build routines and establish expectations for Reader's Workshop. This week students will continue to talk about our thinking while we read. Students will participate in discussions on: What was the story about? How do you know if you have picked a good book? What do you do when you get hung up on something in your book? How can you track your thinking while you read?
Teachers will begin pulling students for reading assessments. This time with your student helps us get to know them a bit more as a reader. Please know that reading teachers will pull all 40 students for assessments during the month of September. You do not need to prep your child for this reading time. The assessment will give us a good look at a starting point for our instruction and guide our creation of small groups.
Classes will get to the library for the first time this week. Our schedule is below. We hope that many of you will volunteer in the library and help us navigate our way to great books!
Writing: It was a pleasure to watch your children build their Writer's Notebooks this week. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know each other better and for the storytelling and sharing to begin! This week in writing we will continue to build anchors and lists of stories we might be able to share. Students will generate ideas and practice focused storytelling in partners before moving to writing in their journals.
We'd love you help at home! Cultivate a culture of storytelling at home. Everyone LOVES a good story. Stories we love to hear have a point and share an event we have in common with those around us or an interesting event that has made an impact on who we are.
Word Work: This week we will administer the Words Their Way Inventory. This assessment will be given three times throughout the school year to track students progress and developmental understanding of how words and spelling patterns work. This assessment is not graded. It will be used for information to help develop lessons and small groups that will target your child's learning needs.
Social Studies: We will introduce our Social Studies resources to students this week. They will work to build their Social Studies resource folder and journal. We will also use our story sharing in Writing to continue to build our classroom community.
Math:Last week in math we learned about classroom procedures and routines. We began reviewing some second grade skills. This week we will continue working on standard form, word form, and expanded form on numbers up to 100,000.
This week we will be discussing in greater depth the value of each place. The students will be taught strategies on how to compare and order numbers using the greater than and less than sign. We will be introducing some new Math Station games to the kids to practice these skills as well. Last week, I encouraged your child to begin practicing their math facts every night or five minutes. The class blog has some great websites to practice - you can find these under the Math Websites page on the right side of the blog.
Science: We skimmed the surface in Science last week. The kids made a title page and table of contents for their Science Journal and decorated them with Science Icons. On Thursday we talked about “What is a Scientist?” We discovered all the different types of Scientists that exist and began working on our first project. In Science next week we will be going through Lab Safety procedures and learning the names of many Science tools. On Tuesday, we will take a gallery walk with a partner and work on categorizing tools by tools that are used for observation, safety, measurement, or recording.

Week of 10/4-10/9
NEWS-- This week is Generation Texas Week. We will spend the week focusing on discussions about why and where we might want to continue our education after high school.
From Mrs. Glass--
From Mrs. Glass--
This week, in class,
students will be researching different colleges and learning what each school
has to offer and what makes the school special.
They will hear their teachers explain why they chose their college and we
will have activities all week relating to post-secondary education and careers. It’s never too early to think about the future!
Please
spend some time this week with your child talking about the importance of
college and their career goals. Take
some time to tell them about your experiences!
Thanks and
Gig’ em!

READING AND WRITING
We will continue to combine our work in Reading and Writing Workshop this week. While students read independently this week, I will pull small groups of students to work on a variety of reading strategies and skills.
Last week, we shared some folktales together and discussed how many cultures have used these stories as a way to teach or explain things to people (folk). This week, we will dive into the genre of myths. Myths are stories that seek to explain, like folktales, but they focus on explaining the beginning of the world or human behavior. As students work with folktales this week, they will continue to track their thinking using symbols and sticky notes. These tracks in our text allow us to notice how an author is engaging his or her audience. We will eventually apply these findings to our own craft of writing.
WORD WORK/SPELLING
This Wednesday will be our kick-off of our Spelling, vocabulary and word work program, Words Their Way. Your child will be introduced to a new spelling sort on Wednesday, in class. Home-study is optional this year. We will send each child home with a HOME-STUDY MENU and a copy of his or her words for the next 10 days. Students will spend 10-15 minutes each day practicing their new pattern (sort) in class to prepare for their first spelling test on Wednesday, October 14. Due to copyright law, I am unable to post spelling words/lists to the blog or email them to you. If you would like to help your child practice at home, please let him other know to bring home a copy of their words for at home practice. I will do my best to encourage such choices in as we prepare our homework each day.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will begin to wrap up our study on Community, Citizenship and Government. We will continue to talk in class about how the United States government is set up. There is a RED review sheet coming home this week to help students prepare for our first Social Studies test. Our first Social Studies test on Community and Government will be on Tuesday, October 13.
MATH
Last week in math we wrapped up our unit on addition. We finished our week off with a review of expanded form and notation and comparing three or more digit numbers. This week, we will begin our study of rounding. On Monday, we will discuss what rounding is and how it can be used in our daily lives. On Tuesday, we will round two digit numbers to the nearest 10. On Wednesday and Thursday, we will round three digit number to the nearest 10 and 100. To end our week, we will have a problem solving day of using addition with estimation. The homework for the week will include: review worksheets on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday night, Problem of the Week due on Friday, and study math facts. This week, the math facts won't be taken as a grade.

SCIENCE
Last week in science, we completed reflections over our properties of matter lab. We began studying how to classify matter. This week, we will continue learning about the states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. We will complete multiple demonstrations that will help our understanding. On Wednesday you can expect a Matter Study Guide to be come home. During our class time, we will work on vocabulary cards that can be used as another tool to study for the science test. The science test will be given on Friday, October 16th. Please study a few minutes every night.

Elements of Fiction, Community and Journal Writing
We had a GREAT first week together getting to know one another and learning new routines and schedules. This week, we will dive into more third grade content. This blog is to be used as a conversation starter for you and your child. Check out what's going on in class this week, and then throw out a informational tidbit or ask questions at home to keep the learning going! Your help and participation is appreciated.
Reading- We will review elements of fiction texts this week. Students will be reminded of the importance of characters, setting, and plot in fiction texts. We will begin the week by identifying elements in the stories we read last week. Then, we will read some new stories together and identify fictional elements. As the week finishes, students will use a book they have read on their own to identify and explain the importance of fictional elements.
Writing- We brainstormed an expert list last week. Students will have an opportunity to expand on those topics this week in their writing journals. This week our goal is to get back into the habit of writing. Students will be encouraged to write, read, revise, write again and read again. Students will learn a new way of sharing writing called POINT. It's an exercise that helps writers notice their strengths and builds classroom community.
Word Work- We will use Words Their Way this year in third grade. This week, students will complete the Elementary Spelling Inventory. This assessment will be give three times throughout the school year to track students progress and developmental understanding of how words and spelling patterns work. This assessment is not graded. It will be used for my information to help develop lessons and small groups that will target your child's learning needs.
Social Studies- We spent last week creating classroom community. This week we will focus on our greater communities and citizens who have served as great role models. Students will be introduced to Ruby Bridges, Helen Keller and Jane Addams this week. We will look at what they did to help their community in the past and how that impacts our communities today. Students will also be encouraged to start thinking about character traits that a "good citizen" would display.
Homework-Third graders will have 20 minutes of reading homework each night. We checked out library books last Thursday, and will return to the library each week on Thursdays. Students should record the book title in their planner each night to show that the required 20minutes was completed.
